Chinese astilbe is native to China and is grown here strictly as an ornamental. This species, and 'Visions in Red' in particular, is somewhat more tolerant of drier soils than other astilbe types, but garden performance is still far superior with consistently moist, organically rich soil — dryness leads to quick decline, especially in sun. It blooms later than Arendsii hybrid astilbes, helping extend the shade garden's bloom season into midsummer.
An upright, compact mound of dark green, fern-like foliage with dark purple stems and petioles is topped by thick, dark purplish-red flower panicles on branching stems, offering some of the deepest, longest-lasting color of any astilbe cultivar.
The plumes draw butterflies, and the plant is notably resistant to browsing by deer and rabbits. If left standing, the dried seed heads add texture and winter interest.
A strong choice for shady borders, woodland gardens, and streamside or pond-adjacent plantings where consistent moisture is available. Pairs well with hostas, ferns, heuchera, and other shade perennials; divide about every four years to keep blooms at their best.
