Purple Coneflower is a hardy perennial with strong upright stems and coarse-textured foliage. It thrives in full sun and average to dry soils, tolerating heat and drought exceptionally well once established. The plant forms attractive clumps that expand slowly over time, providing reliable presence in the garden year after year.

Large daisy-like flowers feature distinctive purple-pink petals that droop downward from prominent orange-brown central cones. Blooming occurs for many weeks from early to late summer, with multiple flowers appearing on each plant. The central cone heads develop into spiny seed heads that remain attractive through winter and provide valuable food for finches and other seed-eating birds.

This species offers exceptional value to pollinators, attracting numerous butterflies, bumblebees, and native bees throughout its extended bloom period. The flowers are rich in nectar and the plant requires minimal care, being resistant to most pests and diseases. Purple Coneflower has a long history of medicinal use in herbal preparations, though current cultivation focuses primarily on ornamental and ecological benefits.

Purple Coneflower excels in sunny perennial borders, native plant gardens, prairie restorations, and pollinator gardens. It combines beautifully with native grasses like Little Bluestem and Prairie Dropseed, and pairs well with Black-eyed Susan, Blanket Flower, and Yarrow. Plant in groups of three or more for maximum visual impact and wildlife benefit.
