'Elijah Blue' is one of the most popular and widely grown cultivars of Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca), selected for its outstanding, intense silver-blue foliage color — among the most vivid blue of any grass available. It forms a compact, tidy, porcupine-like mound of fine, needle-like leaves and is one of the most reliably evergreen ornamental grasses for Spokane gardens. 'Elijah Blue' thrives in full sun with well-drained, lean soils and is notably drought and heat tolerant once established. It does not perform well in heavy, wet, or overly fertile soils.

The primary appeal of 'Elijah Blue' is its year-round foliage color. The narrow, hair-like leaves maintain a striking silver-blue to icy blue hue through all four seasons, providing exceptional color contrast and cool-toned texture in the garden even in summer's heat. In June and July, slender, upright stems carry pale blue-green flower heads that age to tan, adding a subtle softness above the mound. The plant benefits from division every two to three years as the center can open up over time, and from shearing back lightly in early spring to refresh the mound and remove any winter-damaged tips.

While 'Elijah Blue' is primarily grown as an ornamental rather than a wildlife plant, its fine-textured mounds provide habitat for ground-level insects and small invertebrates. The seed heads attract finches and sparrows when present. As a semi-evergreen grass, it provides persistent winter cover that benefits overwintering beneficial insects. It is well-behaved in the garden and not known to self-seed aggressively in the dry inland climate.

Few plants are more useful for adding color contrast, edge definition, and year-round interest to the Spokane landscape than 'Elijah Blue' Fescue. Its cool blue tones make it an ideal contrast plant for warm-colored flowers and foliage, and it is superb as an edging plant, in rock gardens, in mass plantings, and in containers. It pairs exceptionally well with Lemon Squeeze Fountain Grass, Little Zebra Grass, Russian Sage, Sulfur Flower Buckwheat, and Coneflower. Plant in groups of three or more for greatest visual impact.
