Apache Plume is a semi-evergreen deciduous shrub with an upright, multi-branched growth habit. It reaches 4 to 6 feet in height and width, creating an open, airy structure in the landscape. The plant features small, deeply divided leaves that are dark green above and whitish beneath, giving it a fine-textured appearance. It thrives in full sun to part shade and excels in hot, dry locations with well-drained soils. This adaptable shrub tolerates rocky, infertile soils and is well-suited to xeriscape gardens.

White, five-petaled rose-like flowers appear from June through August, measuring about 1.5 inches across with prominent yellow stamens in the center. The blooms are followed by the plant's most distinctive feature: fluffy pink to rose-colored seed heads that resemble feathery plumes. These ornamental seed heads persist from summer through fall and into winter, creating exceptional multi-season interest. The combination of white flowers and pink plumes often occurs simultaneously, adding to the plant's appeal.

Apache Plume attracts numerous pollinators including bees and butterflies with its nectar-rich flowers. The shrub provides cover for small wildlife and birds.
